March Superintendent's Message: A note on Kindergarten Registration and Celebrating Education Week

As we enter the final months of the 2024-2025 academic year, the Peace River School Division is excitedly  preparing our existing students for the successful culmination of their current year studies and preparing to welcome our newest Kindergarten cohort for the upcoming school year.

Registration for the 2025-2026 Kindergarten year is now open and if you have a child born in 2020, they are eligible for enrollment. The PRSD recognizes the foundational importance of play-based learning in early childhood development, and strongly encourages parents to avail of this formalized learning opportunity for their eligible children. Our Kindergarten programs utilize lots of movement, interactive learning centers, and creative teacher-led activities focused on helping our students to expand their knowledge of themselves and to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the world around them.

Our educators know that each student is unique, and as a Division we excel in helping our students identify and develop their strengths in an inclusionary culture that embraces diversity. At the PRSD, your child’s educational success is our priority.

Coming up quickly, we will also celebrate Education Week. This special week has been celebrated in Alberta since 1928. This year, education week takes place between April 7 and 11 and we have the opportunity to showcase some of the remarkable things happening in our schools. For example, did you know that a team of students from Fairview High School returned recently from a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the GENERATE - Energy & Climate Youth Leadership Summit in Canmore where they had the opportunity to dive deep into energy, climate, and environmental education?

Another group of students from Peace River High School are spending part of their semester taking part in an Outdoor Education class, where they most recently learned from local fish and wildlife officers while ice fishing at Figure 8 Lake. A third team of students from Grimshaw Public School just finished participating in a two-month program called “Destination Imagination,” which encourages students to imagine and innovate today, so they can become the creative and collaborative leaders of tomorrow.

Each of these creative and innovative learning opportunities, and the many more that occur throughout the division, are championed by passionate teachers and school leaders focused on providing enriched learning opportunities that help to ensure success for all students under our collective care.
