You Said, We Heard: Student Clubs and Activities

Every year, the Peace River School Division invites upper elementary, Jr. High and Sr. High students to meet with the Superintendent and Board of Trustees to talk about what is important to them when it comes to education. Over the next several weeks we are going to share some of the things students highlighted and some of the ways the PRSD is responding to these topics of discussion.

First up, student interest groups. This topic was brought up by our high school group. Students voiced a desire for more ways to engage with their classmates and teachers, outside of regular classes and athletics. Students suggested they would like the ability to create more clubs representative of the students' diverse interests.

As as Division, we certainly want to encourage the development of each of our students' special interests and encourage our students to reach out to their Principals for ideas on how to start a special interest group at their school. Currently, PRSD schools do offer students the opportunity to participate in travel groups, drama clubs, leadership opportunities such as Rotary Club leadership camps and student parliament, participating in annual Science Olympics, among other things.

To highlight one school in particular, Paul Rowe Jr./Sr. High School has a robust list of student interest clubs at their school. From newspaper club, LGBTQS2+ and Allies Club, Dungeons and Dragons club, a Travel Club, intramurals and student parliament.

In a survey of our High School Principals, most principals indicated students need only ask if they are interested in starting a club that doesn't already exist at their school.
