You Said, We Heard: Safer Washrooms

Every year, the Peace River School Division invites upper elementary, Jr. High and Sr. High students to meet with the Superintendent and Board of Trustees to talk about what is important to them when it comes to education. Over the next several weeks we are going to share some of the things students highlighted and some of the ways the PRSD is responding to these topics of discussion.

Today we are going to talk about student washrooms. Students expressed concern about vandalism, student hang outs, and other inappropriate behaviours inside washrooms at their schools. They spoke about the need for greater privacy in the washroom stalls to improve student comfort and safety while using the washroom.

This is something the PRSD has already made, and will continue to make, a priority in our schools. Over the last two summers, we have renovated washrooms at Peace River High School to improve student comfort and safety. The implementation of similar renovations at more PRSD schools will continue to be a priority. Additionally, most schools have installed security cameras in the hallways outside of washrooms to monitor how many students are entering a washroom and for what length of time.

At the PRSD we take student safety seriously and encourage students to continue to bring these concerns to their administrators as they arise.
