Dixonville Community Engaged in Public Consultation

Community members, parents, students and Dixonville School staff met with the Peace River School Division's Board of Trustees at Dixonville School on Wednesday, April 2 between 6:30 and 9 p.m. The community meeting was held to receive feedback from the community regarding the future viability of Dixonville School.
In January of this year, the Board of Trustees learned the enrolment projection for the school in Dixonville was expected to fall below 35 students in the Fall of 2025. This meant that funding for the school would be cut dramatically, as the school's total enrolment no longer qualified for the Alberta Government's supplemental Small Rural Schools grant funding. After receiving this information, the Board of Trustees decided by motion to begin the school and program viability review process for Dixonville School, in accordance with Board Policy 15.
Then, on March 13 the Board of Trustees received the Dixonville School Viability Report, which had been prepared by Superintendent Dr. Jeff Thompson with assistance from his administrative team. Upon review of the Report, the board unanimously voted to continue with the process of the School and Program Viability Review.
The public meeting on April 2 partially fulfilled the Board's responsibility, as per Board Policy 15, to receive feedback from the community. The Board will also continue to receive written or verbal feedback regarding Dixonville School until April 14. Anyone wishing to submit written feedback may do so by contacting Communications Coordinator Kristin Dyck. Anyone wishing to submit verbal feedback, may do so by calling Central Operations at 780-624-3601 and asking to speak with Superintendent Thompson.
Following the public meeting, Board Chair Crystal Owens expressed her gratitude to the Dixonville Community for their role in providing valuable feedback to the Board of Trustees. To listen to an interview between the Trending 55 Newsroom and Chair Owens, click HERE.
