Families Matter at PRSD: February 18-21

From February 18 to 21, across the Peace River School Division, staff and students will take some time to recognize the important role our families play in student success. This week is known as "Families Matter Week," a 13-year tradition of celebrating our support systems.

“Families Matter Week is a very exciting week in the division that we look forward to every year” said Crystal Owes, PRSD board chair. “It provides students and staff the opportunity to say thank you to our families for their encouragement, support and involvement. They are such an important part of the education system and their contributions deserve a week of recognition.”

Dodgeball faceoffs, lunch time with family, pancake breakfasts, dad & lad mini sticks paired with mom and me jewelry making events, giant board game showdowns, and a family literacy night
are only a few of many ways schools are showing their appreciation to families this week. Additionally, every PRSD student will be given class time to reflect and write messages of appreciation on specially created “Families Matter” cards that they will then give to their special family members.

The week-long celebration was created in 2011 when PRSD students expressed an outpouring of
appreciation for the part their parents and guardians play in their education and life during an online
campaign. When students were asked “How can parents be involved in student success” hundreds of
students responded with posts of heartfelt appreciation. The online engagement committee reviewed the results and decided to create a week dedicated to parents and guardians.

"How empowering for students to know their voice created this week of special recognition, and how special for parents and guardians to know they are so deeply appreciated,” said Owens.

We invite you to follow along during the week by watching school and divisional Facebook pages and websites.
