PRSD Celebrates Grand Opening of North Peace Commercial Driving Academy

With its second intake of students well on their way to obtaining their Class 1 MELT license, the Peace River School Division celebrated the official grand opening of the North Peace Commercial Driving Academy on Tuesday, September 17.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the afternoon, the PRSD shared their excitement with special guests and staff members. Superintendent Adam Murray emceed the Grand Opening ceremonies and shared about how the Collegiate School went from a question at a local council meeting, to an idea at the Board table, and now to a fully-operational driving academy.

The Academy, which is a partnership between the PRSD and Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP), is set up to offer both eligible PRSD students and industry professionals the opportunity to take their Class 1 MELT driver training closer to home. Prior to the opening of the North Peace Commercial Driving Academy, the closest MELT facility was located in Grande Prairie, at NWP.

In attendance at the grand opening were representatives from local municipalities, industry and media, along with Peace River Constituency Manager Angela Cobick who shared words of congratulations on behalf of MLA Dan Williams; Grande Prairie MLA Nolan Dyck who brought congratulations on behalf of the Minister of Education Demetrios Nicolaides; Shaun Saxton from Alberta Transportation; and NWP Associate Dean of Continuing Education Michelle Hutchingame.

The PRSD extends its gratitude to everyone who came out to help us celebrate on September 17 and everyone who assisted us along the way. We are incredibly proud of what was accomplished in under two years.

The North Peace Commercial Driving Academy currently offers both the Class 1 MELT program, and Class 2S driving instruction. For more information about the Academy, please visit their website at www.northpeacedrivingacademy.ca
