Learning Services - Youth Education Support Worker
Youth Education Support Workers promote positive mental health in children, youth, families and communities. We strengthen the capacity of schools and communities to promote mental health and wellness by helping teachers teach students skills for good mental health. We spend most of our time working with big groups (like a full class of students and the teacher). This way, everyone learns and lots of problems are avoided because students know how to handle life's tough stuff before it happens.
YES Workers help students to identify the adults they can turn to, find additional adults who can support them, and facilitate new connections. YES Workers also work with adults so they have great skills to support the students they know.
At FHS, students are supported in Health and CALM classes through programs like the Second Step, Red Cross Healthy Youth Relationships, the Fourth R, Mind Up and Mindful Schools Curriculum. Small groups like Spectrum (Rainbows) - Grief and Loss, Girls Circle and Boys Club are offered to support students with a variety of social-emotional goals and learning. School wide universal programming is also offered including the Student Wellness Action Team and the celebration of events like Pink Shirt Day and Mental Health Awareness Week.
