Board Highlights October, 2019

Superintendent Bennett provides September 30th student enrolment report
Peace River School Division’s Superintendent Paul Bennett provided the board with student enrolment numbers as of October 7, 2019. PRSD’s enrolment is 3085 students, which includes students who have registered with PRSD’s homeschooling program. Our student enrolment for the 2019-2020 school year is higher than the June 2019 enrolment numbers and also exceeds the projected student enrolment due to the significant increase in the number of students registered as homeschoolers.   School divisions in Alberta receive funding based on a per-student basis as of September 30 of each year.

New Trustee Orientation
PRSD board of trustees welcomed Ward four (4) trustee Richard Walisser to Peace River School Division.  Richard represents ward four, which includes Peace River, Rural Peace River and Shaftesbury.  “We welcome Richard as Ward four trustee and look forward to working with him in his new role,” says Board Chair Darren Kuester.  Richard will participate in an orientation for his new role, which will occur on October 23, 2019, at Central Operations.

Treaty 8 and Métis Flags to be displayed at all Peace River Division schools
Since 2018 the Peace River School Division board of trustees has been considering raising the Treaty 8 flag at division schools.  In an effort to be more inclusive, PRSD passed the following motion at its October 17, 2019 board meeting “That the board of trustees recognize our relationship with Treaty 8 people and the Métis Nation by displaying Treaty 8 flags and Métis flags at each school site, and further, that administration be directed to work with various local elders to come together to develop a flag policy that honors all of the Indigenous people in our area”  Board Chair Kuester stated “The board unanimously voted in favor of displaying the Treaty 8 and Métis flags to honor traditional land, Indigenous culture and to impact change and support reconciliation through education, celebration and acknowledgement of Indigenous territory and history.”

Council of School Councils meeting
The board of trustees will gather for a Council of School Councils meeting on November 21, 2019, following the regularly scheduled board meeting at Central Operations.  Some of the agenda topics include a tour of Central Operations and wrap-around services.

Cleardale Colony School Grand Opening
Some members of the board of trustees, along with Superintendent Paul Bennett, will be attending the grand opening of Cleardale Colony School, which will take place on October 31, 2019, at 10 am. PRSD has been administering the Cleardale Colony since 2002.  Trustees and administration are pleased to join with students, staff and colony members to celebrate their brand new school.
