PRSD Celebrates Education Week and Mental Health Awareness Week
Education Week is April 29 - May 3, 2019, May 1 is Hats On! For Mental Health followed by Mental Health Week - May 7 - 11 is Mental Health Awareness Week – a celebration of education and recognition of the importance of positive mental health.
We are very pleased to host various activities and events during these special weeks of awareness that highlight the importance of education and mental health in our lives, families, schools, communities and the world. Both educational needs and mental health needs are crucial aspects of well-being, learning and success. There are many events happening in school communities throughout the division, please join your local school in celebration of Education Week and Mental Health Awareness Week - our doors are always open.
Here’s a listing of events happening in our schools:
Manning Elementary School students and staff will kick off Education week by wearing their favourite school spirit wear on Monday, April 29! On Wednesday, May 1, there will be a Reading Assembly with Community Members at 12:35 pm, followed on Friday by a Family Breakfast being held in the MES gym from 8:00-9:00am, sounds delicious! Students from grades 5 & 6 will be travelling to Grimshaw Public School for the annual Hand Games competition which is also on Friday, May 3. In support of Mental Health week, Manning Elementary will be wearing their Hat’s On! For Mental Health on Wednesday, May 8, and on Thursday, May 9 they will all be participating in a Tri school fun run!
The community and parents of Hines Creek are invited to join students and staff of Hines Creek Composite School for a pancake breakfast on May 2, 2019, from 7:45-9:00am. Students and staff will also be wearing green on May 9, 2019 in recognition of the importance of mental health.
Worsley Central School has a lot of exciting things planned for Education Week! They are kicking it off with a writing/drawing assignment on “What I like about School” on Monday, April 29, 2019. Tuesday, the students will come to school dressed for their future career, followed on Wednesday May 1, with a student, staff and parent ball tournament. Thursday, May 2, Worsley students will be making crafts to deliver to their bus drivers as a thank you for transporting them to school safely. Friday, students and staff will wear their school colors to show school pride! In support of Mental Health Week May 6-12, Worsley students have a variety of activities planned. Monday May 6, the students will be participating in Random Acts of Kindness, which will run all week. Jr/Sr high students will be participating in a yoga class on Tuesday, while the elementary students will listen to stories and color. Thursday, May 9, will have Worsley Central School will have the elementary students participating in free play games in the gym, while the “big kids” play on the playground equipment. Way to go Worsley!
Students and staff at Fairview High School will take part in Hats On for Mental Health by wearing hats to school on May 1, 2019. There will be sidewalk chalk messages daily at the entrance to the school during Mental Health Awareness Week (weather permitting). Resources are also being shared with staff to integrate mental health conversations and learning into classroom learning. Lastly, school and staff are going to “Blanket the Wall for Mental Health”, making a “quilt” to display their thoughts on Mental Health. The quilt will be displayed in the hallway of FHS.
During Education Week, Paul Rowe students will “Leave Your Mark” handprints on the walls of the school. Every student will have their handprint on the wall of Paul Rowe! Watch for Facebook posts and school announcements with messages referencing Education week. Students from Paul Rowe High School will also hold Mentorship reading with high school students to junior high students. On Friday, May 3, students will be participating in the Hand Games tournament hosted by Grimshaw Public School. During Mental Health Awareness Week, hats will be worn on May 8th for Hats On! For Mental Health. On May 9th, there will be a school presentation by Walter MacDonald-Whitebear from Music Alive in the afternoon followed by a community Mental Health Run with all the schools in Manning. The run starts at Rosary School at 4:00pm.
FALS students will be organizing and hosting a pot luck dinner on Thursday, May 9th to commemorate both Education week and Mental Health Awareness week.
E.E. Oliver students and staff will kick off Education Week with an assembly on Monday, April 29, 2019 at 1:00pm followed by the school’s ‘Leaders as Readers’ event where community members will be reading and talking to students about how education is an important aspect of being a leader. To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Week, students and staff will wear hats to school for Hats On! For Mental Health on Wednesday, May 1 and on Friday, May 3 the school will be a sea of green as they wear green in recognition of the importance of Mental Health.

In celebration of Education Week April 29-May 3, classes will hold a Readers Cafe with teachers on Monday followed by House groups gathering in the gym for activities. Wednesday, students and staff will wear hats for Hats On! For Mental Health and grade 4 to 6 will hold a bake sale. On Thursday, parents are invited for Lasagne Lunch served by Jr High students with a PAC Meeting to follow at 12:30pm. At 1:30pm all students and parents will gather for assembly.
Closing the week, students from grade 3-9 will attend the Hand Games tournament hosted at Grimshaw Public School.
In celebration of Education Week and Mental Health week, Dixonville School is hosting a breakfast on Monday, April 29, 2019, prepared and served by student council. Student Council has various Education Week themed activities during the week such as Student/Parent/Staff dodgeball on Tuesday, Wednesday they wear hats in recognition Hats on! For Mental Health day in recognition of the importance of mental health. Formal day and dance on will take place on Thursday with an archery tournament at TA Norris Middle School. Dixonville School will end the week with Pajama Day while some students will be away attending the Hand Games tournament at Grimshaw Public School.
Nampa Public School is hosting their annual Education Week community pancake breakfast at 7:45-9:00am on Friday, May 10.
For Education Week, Peace River High School will be advertising events and activities in classes throughout the week on events happening at Peace High. Registration night and Information session will be held on Wednesday, May 1 from 7:00-8:30pm and a Celebration of Success Assembly will be held on Thursday, May 2 at 1:20pm.
Information for Mental Health week events will be posted around the school on Famous people in history who have persevered through Mental Health conditions. Students will participate in a research lesson on someone that they know or know of that has persevered through Mental Health concerns.
During the week, Red Earth Creek School students and staff will construct a school-wide story in recognition of Education Week and Mental Health Awareness and it will be shared with the whole school during assembly on May 10th. On May 1st, 2019, students will wear hats to school for Hats On! For Mental Health day. Several of our students will participate in the PRSD Hand Games Competition on May 3rd at Grimshaw Public School. On May 7th, 2019, students will read to each other during reading buddies time and will be wearing green for Mental Health week. The school will also be hosting Math Olympics on May 9th, 2019.
In celebration of Education Week, on Monday, April 29, TA Norris will hold a Worldwide School Trivia where students will see a link to 18 Fun Facts about education around the world. Thank You Day will be held on April 30 where members of TA Norris are encouraged to say thank you to one another, it could be by word of mouth or special notes that will be available throughout the day. In recognition of Mental Health week, TA Norris students and staff will wear their hats for Hats On! For Mental Health on Wednesday, May 1, as well, teachers are encouraged to bring one of their classes outside to teach a lesson followed by Dress as your Career You Want Day on Thursday. In recognition of Mental Health Week, on Tuesday, May 7, students will participate in a Self-care exercise with sidewalk chalk where everyone will write self-care ideas on the sidewalks. Next, on Wednesday, May 8 students and staff will wear green for Mental Health while promoting good mental health care. Mindfulness minutes will take place on Thursday, May 9 with T.A’s Top Wolves who will research and learn a 5 min mindfulness exercise and teach it to students in each of the classes. Friday, May 10 students will Take a breath of fresh air with outdoor activities for all classes during the last period of the day.
Springfield Elementary started Early Education week on April 24 with an indigenous drumming and dancing performance by Devin Bellerose. On April 29, 2019, the school will host their student talent show at 10 am. Tuesday, April 30 Springfield Elementary will be doing their Jump Rope for Heart activities, followed by their Character Education Assembly on May 2 at 12:30pm. On Friday, May 3, the grade four students will attend PRSD Hand Games Competition at Grimshaw Public School. On May 1, 2019, the students and staff of Springfield Elementary School will also be wearing their hats for Hat’s On! Mental Health Week.
On May 1, 2019, students and staff will wear hats to school for Hats On for Mental Health day and hosting an Education Week BBQ. On May 8, 2019, the school is hosting an Education Week luncheon.
Grimshaw Public School has a variety of activities going on for Mental Health Week and Education Week. Wednesday, May 1, 2019 the staff and students will wear their Hats ON! For Mental Health Week. Throughout the week, GPS will be writing inspiring messages on the sidewalks outside with sidewalk chalk, and the student body will also be making cards during the week! Thursday, May 2, Smile cookies will be delivered during DEAR (drop everything and read) time. Finally, on Friday, May 3, 2019 Grimshaw Public School will be hosting the annual Hand Games Tournament, which will consist of over 500 students from Peace River School Division.
