For immediate release
April 27, 2018- Hundreds of the best student badminton players in the province are soon to join at Grimshaw Public School (GPS) for the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association Badminton Provincial Championship. Approximately 350 students from Alberta schools are set to attend.
“It is an honour to host student athletes from across our province for the badminton provincials” says GPS Principal Adam Murray. “This is our first sporting event of this size since we opened the doors of our new school attached to the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex. It’s awesome to have such a great facility for everyone to enjoy and with the space at the field house, ice surface and the gym space at the former Kennedy Elementary School and Grimshaw Jr Sr High School, we are easily able to accommodate such a big event.”
Provincial play will kick off at the Mile Zero Regional Multiplex field house on May 4, 2018 with registration at 8:00 am, a ‘Meet and Greet Breakfast’ sponsored by Super A Foods, followed by the opening ceremonies.
The opening ceremonies will begin with the marching in of the athletes, the acknowledgement of territory land and greetings from the Honourable Marg McCuaig-Boyd, Energy Minister and MLA for Dunvegan-Central Peace-Notley. Peace River School Division (PRSD) Superintendent Paul Bennett, the Town of Grimshaw’s Mayor Bob Regal and GPS Principal Adam Murray will also bring greetings and welcome athletes and guests. Brooke Foster, grade 12 student and GPS’s Student Parliament Leadership Team’s Prime Minister will emcee the ceremony and the GPS junior/senior music club will lead the singing of the national anthem.
“The town is so very proud to host this type of event in our new Shared Schools Facility in our community” says Town of Grimshaw Mayor Bob Regal. “We wish all the competitors and spectators a wonderful weekend - good luck to everyone.”
Provincial play will begin at noon on Friday May 4, 2018 with the gold medal match expected to take place around 3:00 pm on Saturday, May 5, 2018.
“The board of trustees sends a warm welcome and the best of luck to all competitors and extends gratitude to all those who are planning, organizing and sponsoring the event” says Board Chair Darren Kuester. “Hosting a provincial tournament is a wonderful opportunity for the entire community - we encourage the public to come out enjoy provincial calibre play and cheer on the athletes.”
