PRSD trustees approve new Board Policy Handbook

PRSD trustees approve new Board Policy Handbook

For immediate release

June 22, 2016 –Peace River School Division’s (PRSD) policy handbook will change to a model widely used by school divisions in the province that brings greater clarity and efficiencies for board and overall divisional operations. During the regular board meeting held yesterday, trustees rescinded the current Board Policies Handbook and approved the new Board Policy Handbook, both effective on July 1, 2016.

PRSD’s new Policy Handbook has a total of twenty board policies supported by an Administrative Procedures Manual.

“The policies remain intact within the new handbook, the main difference being the clear identification of what is board policy and what are administrative procedures” says Board Chair Darren Kuester. “This will create greater efficiencies and clarity for the board, staff, parents and all our stakeholders as to what the board is directly responsible for and what is handled by executive staff and school administration.”

PRSD has been working on making this change since June 2015 and utilized the services of Terry Gunderson, a highly qualified consultant who works for the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) to assist in developing the new policy handbook. Terry is a former school principal, superintendent, school board trustee and currently works for the ASBA to assist school boards across the province with various board governance processes and procedures.

In addition to the leadership of Mr. Gunderson, the board, management and school principals spent considerable time working with management staff to review the new Policy Handbook and Administrative Procedures Manual.

The new Policy Handbook and Administrative Procedures Manual will be posted online in early July.
