May 2-6 is Education and Mental Health Awareness Week
May 2-6, 2016 is Education Week and Mental Health Awareness Week in Peace River School Division (PRSD). The theme of Education Week 2016 is Learning Together, which is fitting with PRSD’s mission statement: Learning Together, Success for All. During this week schools throughout PRSD will celebrate education and learning and acknowledge the importance of positive mental health and promote understanding of mental and emotional wellness.
Here’s a listing of events happening in our schools:
Manning Elementary School
Students at MES will wear green and T.W.I.S.T (Teaching Wellness in Schools Team) will be delivering morning announcements about wellness throughout the week. Miss Ryan teaches mental health awareness classes every Wednesday and promotes positive mental and physical health. Join them in supporting mental health awareness by wearing green!
Hines Creek Composite School
The community and parents of Hines Creek are invited to join students and staff of Hines Creek Composite School for a pancake breakfast on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 from 7:45-9:00 AM.
Worsley Central School
Students and staff of Worsley Central School will be wearing their green shirts in support of mental health awareness and will also be participating in Hats On for Mental Health Day. There will also be daily announcements about mental health.
Fairview and Area Learning Store
FALS students, staff and families are invited to kick-off Education Week with a pizza dinner on Monday, May 2, 2016. Pizza will be served from 6 PM and all are welcome to share a meal, wisdom, and each other’s company.
E.E. Oliver Elementary
E.E. Oliver students and staff will be wearing green in support of mental health awareness and participating in Hats On for Mental Health on Wednesday, May 4.
Lloyd Garrison School
Students will have a week full of activities at LGS beginning each morning with a guest reader in the library. On Monday students will wear green for mental health awareness. Tuesday students will celebrate their identity by presenting a special interest of theirs to the rest of the school. Wednesday is ‘Hats On for Mental Health, and on Thursday there will be a multicultural lunch and Chalk Talk (2:30-3:00). The week wraps up with the Hand Games competition on Friday.
Students and staff of Dixonville School will be wearing green shirts as well as receiving daily announcements about positive mental health and in-class lessons. Ms. Ryan will do Mindful Moments as part of Universal Education on Thursday, May 5 where students will practice deep breathing and mindful movements. The grade 6-9 social group is planning relaxation and guided reading for Friday May 6th, and there will also be Science Olympics that afternoon to celebrate Education Week. Parents/Guardians are invited to attend the Science Olympics and join the teams.
Nampa Public School
Nampa Public School will be hosting a pancake breakfast on Friday, May 6, 2016 from 8-9:30 AM.
T.A. Norris School
Students at T.A. Norris have a great week of activities lined up -
Monday: Mindful Monday during homeroom; TA Staff will wear our Mental Health T-shirts
Tuesday: Sidewalk Chalk Day during lunch recess
Wednesday: Students are allowed to wear hats in school as part of the Hats On for Mental Health day; Students in Miss Holmes’ Yoga & Meditation exploratory will have a special Mindfulness activity
Thursday: Students are encouraged to wear green for Children’s Mental Health Day; students will get a Mental Health message on green paper along with their piece of toast (a regular Thursday event)
Friday: Feeling Friday: Virtue Assembly (Acceptance vs Sadness) at 9:00 AM and Tree of Hope Activity; TA Staff will wear our Mental Health T-shirts
Students and staff at Springfield will begin each day of the week with an inspirational song during morning announcements and will celebrate each day with a different activity beginning with Mindful Monday, where each class will do a mindful activity. On Tuesday students will create a cheerful chain by writing something that they are grateful for or good at on a strip of paper that will then make a chain. Students and staff are encouraged to wear a hat on Wednesday for Hats On for Mental Health. Thursday will be Positive Post-its where everyone will write positive messages on post-it notes that will then be left on a recipient’s locker or on the bulletin board. Friday is all about green and staff will wear green shirts and everyone will participate in Green Therapy by heading outside for a break or a walk.
Grimshaw Jr/Sr High
Students at GHS will kick-off the week with Chalk Talk on Monday. Using chalk students will write messages about the importance of mental health and about what makes them feel good on the sidewalk. Tuesday is Green Shirt Day and Wednesday is Hats On for Mental Health day where everyone is invited to wear a green shirt and then a hat to show their support for raising the awareness of mental health.
Peace Regional Outreach
On Tuesday everyone is encouraged to wear green shirts to show their support for positive mental health awareness and students and staff will also participate in mental health activities over their lunch hours and Thursdays Life Skills will be all about mental health.
